Major environmental issue affecting the border of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Go to our News page to read more.
In October 1988, Nicaragua was ravaged by Hurricane Mitch which left destruction in its wake. Moved by the scenes of damage and devastation, the people of Leicester supported their sister city in the aftermath.
Two micro-projects focusing on pig breeding and chicken rearing originated as a result of the damage caused by Hurricane Mitch when acid rain affected crops. Pig breeding was introduced to provide an alternative source of food and income. The project was developed with community participation and was supported by technical assistance from REMA (the Environmental Network of Masaya).
For further information and updates on this and other projects, in Nicaragua, please view our bulletins.
