Events & Campaigns

The LMLG organises a number of public and fundraising events, including speaker meetings, discussions, displays, workshops and music events throughout the year to inform people about the work we do, raise awareness and promote local understanding of sustainable development, social justice, human rights and other relevant global issues.

Reviews of Recent Events:

11 October 2011 - Learning from our Partners and LMLG AGM.   The AGM business meeting was followed by a presentation from Dani Gent and Matt Smith, who have recently returned from 9 months in Masaya.  Dani shared some findings of her PhD research into the impact of solar energy projects in Nicaragua and Matt, a Secondary School teacher, talked about creating development education resources for the LMLG. 16th, 18th and 19th July 2011 - Reaching Out! took place at Southfields Library in celebration of Leicester’s six international twinning links.  The event offered a vibrant array of displays, craft activities, storytelling, dance and costume workshops, music and DVD presentations, as well as an opportunity to sample foods from the different countries. 19 June 2011 -  Light and Life sponsored bike ride Jon Cloke, the Vice Chair of the LMLG set out on an ambitious and energetic bike ride to cycle from John O’Groats to Land's End (1,035 miles) to raise money for some of the LMLG's poverty alleviation projects.  This enthusiastic feat of endurance raised 0ver £800 for project work in Masaya so many thanks and congratulations to Jon!  To see Jon's blog, please visit the Light and Life pages.

  • 24 Nov 2010 - LMLG Annual General Meeting and discussion 'Surviving in the Current Climate':  5.30 - 7pm at Southfields Libarary, Southfields Drive, Leicester LE2 6QS.
  • 20 Nov 2010 - Global Community Links Inspiration Activation Workshop: 10am - 4pm at Southfields Libarary, Southfields Drive, Leicester LE2 6QS.  This all day workshop was aimed at community groups with links around the world to develop and seek funding for global learning activities in the UK.  Since the event, the Department for International Development has withdrawn the  funding for the workshops and community global learning activitie.
  • 12 Oct 2010 - Global Education Leicester-Shire Network Meeting at Southfields Library, Southfields Drive, Leicester LE2 6QS.  From 4 - 5.30pm

Events in 2005

  • Annual General Meeting and Prospects for Sustainable Development in Central America (Wed 30 Nov 2005)
    Following the year spent in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, Chloe Hill, PhD student at Loughborough University talked about her research into the Meso-American biological corridor. The evening concluded with a reading from the Peasant Poets of Solentiname in memory of Peter Wright.
  • Make Poverty History Youth Event (Mon 7 Nov 2005)
    An interactive event invited young people (14-16) across the region to critically engage with the key issues of trade, aid and debt.  Workshops and debates provided opportunity for shared learning among youth groups and schools already involved in activities around the MPH theme as well as those wanting to find out more.
  • The World In Your Lunch Box (Sat 15 Oct 2005)
    ‘Make and taste’ sessions, activities and displays focused on Leicester’s global links to inspire healthy packed lunches using fair-trade ingredients from around the world.

  • Club La Pachanga, Chacon Y Su Timba (Sat 8 Oct 2005)
    It was an opportunity to hear and dance the night away to the best of Latin American Salsa, which raised £700 for projects in Masaya.

    Cuban-born artist Osvaldo Chacon had played alongside many of the great salsa artists, including Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Oscar de Leon and others. He delighted us with the great Timba sound of his 7-piece ensemble "Chacon y su Timba" - a London-based band with a fantastic reputation!

    The LMLG provided a display and information about successful projects that have been undertaken as a result of the money raised at Club La Pachanga events.
  • Renewable Energy In Nicaragua (22 Sept 2005)
    Dominic McCann and John Perry talked about work on recent projects that provide solar power for rural communities in two areas of Nicaragua.
  • Leicester & Me (26th June 2005)
    This is the culminating event at Belgrave Hall, following a year long festival celebrating Leicester’s cultural diversity. Activities for all ages were offered across a number of different themes, from music to food and crafts.

    The LMLG provided the Nicaraguan contribution and brought a Latin American Flavour to each of the activity areas!  Click to read the event review.
  • Rich World, Poor World(18th June 2005)
    In June, we held an event, Rich World, Poor World, which involved a lunch aimed at highlighting global inequality, with a focus on Nicaragua and development projects in Masaya. MPH banners are appearing on a number of buildings, including the Town Hall (where our office is based) and On World White Band Day (1 July), the LMLG joined over a hundred local supporters to wrap the Victorian fountain outside the Town Hall in a giant white band.   • Cultural Connections Review (March 2005)
    In 2005, the LMLG devised and presented an all day event to raise awareness of Leicester’s twinning links as part of the ‘Leicester and Me’ project, a large-scale community festival celebrating Leicester’s cultural diversity. The aim was to raise the profile of Leicester’s global links with its twin cities around the world and show how town-twinning promotes increased understanding of different cultural traditions and helps to foster friendship between peoples of the world.

The Leicester Masaya Link Group was one of more than 600 organisations who signed up to MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign at national level. In Leicester we collaborated with other organisations and individuals to co-ordinate and contribute to events and activities to raise awareness and encourage people to get involved in the campaign at a local level.
