Linking Local Lives - Creating Global Connections: 7 Feb and 24 April 2012

GELS is working alongside the Schools Linking Network to offer a FREE programme of support for schools to develop meaningful and sustainable partnerships that will help to increase understanding of identity, diversity and belonging.

The programme is being delivered by Linda Barker, the Schools Linking Network Regional Associate for the Midlands, and will include CPD sessions, resources and activities to enable up to 20 schools to develop local links.

GELS will provide guidance on using the links to contribute to work on the global dimension and education for sustainable development across a wide range of initiatives including the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award, the International School Award, Eco Schools Award and more.

The programme is aimed at KS2 and is most suitable for Year 4 with linking taking place between one class from each of the two linked schools.

GELS and SLN will facilitate a project for the 2 classes to meet and take part in a day of activities. Please note however, that the cost of this event is not included in the package.  The programme culminates with a celebration event which allows the schools to consolidate and share their learning.

After this, GELS is able to support member schools to sustain and build on the links.  Schools that are not yet members are asked to join at the beginning of the programme and will benefit from a range of other services.

This free programme is only available in the Spring and Summer terms of 2012 and early booking is recommended.  Linking Local Lives flyer.pdf.

Head Teacher and Chairs of Governors Briefings - In September 2011, Clare Carr and Claire Plumb delivered a presentation to 190 Head Teachers and 150 Chairs of Governors from Leicesetershire County Schools, to introduce GELS and outline the benefits that membership offers schools.  60 schools signed up for a trial term's membership.

Showcase 2010 - This event was a celebration of work which was undertaken as part of the East Midlands Network for Global Perspectives in Schools, and marked the end of funding from the Department for International Development.  4 City and County schools came together to share their learning about global issues and community cohesion in a dynamic range of presentations and displays.  Pupils and students were treated to a Salsa daning workshop and international food and the event was attended by 85 people, including local dignitaries.
