Global Education Leicester-Shire (GELS)

Resources for Engaged and Active Learning

GELS is a network and resource centre (based in Southfields Library) that supports projects and partnerships between schools and local organisations to help develop the global dimension within the curriculum and the wider school community.

To this end, GELS promotes a holistic approach to enable schools to bring global perspectives to life.  Our methodologies help young people develop themselves as global citizens who value the rich diversity of their local communities in Leicester and across Leicestershire as they contribute to a just and sustainable world.

The GELS network is made up of teachers and specialists from a range of providers operating across the city and county, addressing issues of community cohesion, faith, culture and diversity, human rights, social justice, the environment and sustainable development.

Membership is open and we actively seek to engage schools, encourage teacher-led activities and provide opportunities to explore and collaborate around global themes.

Recent Events and Projects

Head Teacher and Chairs of Governors Briefings - In September 2011, Clare Carr and Claire Plumb delivered a presentation to 190 Head Teachers and 150 Chairs of Governors from Leicesetershire County Schools, to introduce GELS and outline the benefits that membership offers schools.  60 schools signed up for a trial term's membership.

Showcase 2010 - This event was a celebration of work which was undertaken as part of the East Midlands Network for Global Perspectives in Schools, and marked the end of funding from the Department for International Development.  4 City and County schools came together to share their learning about global issues and community cohesion in a dynamic range of presentations and displays.  Pupils and students were treated to a Salsa daning workshop and international food and the event was attended by 85 people, including local dignitaries.
